PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – For the eighth consecutive year, the Baylor women’s tennis team will have at least one player in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships singles main draw as sophomore Ema Burgic won her sixth straight match at the event on Wednesday.

“Ema competed really well today,” head coach Joey Scrivano said. “Ema’s offensive game development is really showing in this tournament. It is keeping her in these matches.”

Burgic took down Yale’s 85th-ranked Elizabeth Epstein 6-4, 6-2, at the Riviera Tennis Club to record her sixth consecutive straight-sets win and fifth straight victory over a ranked opponent.

“Ema is maturing with each match and is a lot more coachable than she was a year ago,” Scrivano said. “She still has a lot of room for growth in her game, but it is nice to see a player that has put in a lot of hard work  and overcome some injuries have some success.”

With the win, Burgic clinches one of eight spots from the qualifying draw into the main draw. Just three days ago, Burgic won her way from the pre-qualifying draw into the qualifying draw.

The sophomore becomes the first Baylor player since Zuzana Cerna in 2005 to advance from the pre-qualifying draw to the main draw.

On Thursday, Burgic will start play in the 32-player singles main draw against an opponent to be determined. Prior to singles action, Burgic will team with Jordaan Sanford to face Duke’s 19th-ranked Beatrice Capra and Hanna Mar in the opening round of main draw doubles play at 11 a.m.
