College Tennis News - Roberto Quiroz Sores a Men's Singles Spot, DeSimone/Scandalis Advance to Women's Doubles

The USC men's and women's tennis teams are competing about 1,500 miles apart, but success is still the name of the game for both sets of Trojans. Into today's crucial final rounds of qualifying, USC's Robert Quiroz has secured a spot in the men's singles main draw in Tulsa, Okla., while Gabriella DeSimone and Zoë Scandalis have teamed up for score a place in the women's doubles main draw in Pacific Palisades, Calif.

DeSimone picked up steam first with a strong run in prequalifying singles. That confidence boost grew greater once paired with teammate Scandalis for women's doubles qualifying rounds. The Women of Troy served up three qualifying wins, including two today to clinch a place in the main draw starting tomorrow. USC already has top-ranked Trojan tandem Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria on the list for doubles action, along with three representatives in the singles draw. #7 Zoë Scandalis will face a qualifier tomorrow, #8 Sabrina Santamaria is up against UNC's #24 Sabrina Santamaria, and #11 Danielle Lao faces #12 Kate Turvy of Northwestern.

On the men's side, #85 Roberto Quiroz's heroics in qualifying saw the sophomore tack up three straight-set wins to force his way into the singles main draw. There, Quiroz will be in the company of three more Trojans. #9 Ray Sarmiento opens his campaign against #52 Alexis Heugas of VCU, #23 Emilio Gomez is up against #50 Leandro Toledo of Minnesota, #25 Yannick Hanfman faces #11 Andreas Mies of Auburn, and Quiroz is lined up against #30 Juan Spir of Georgia Tech. In men's doubles, Gomez and Hanfmann are paired up for the main draw, with #12 Quiroz/Sarmiento also paired up for doubles competition.
