TULSA, Okla. - LSU men's tennis players Olivier Borsos and Chris Simpson each picked up ranked wins in the consolation singles draw at the ITA All-American Championships Thursday at Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Borsos, ranked 18th nationally, fell in the first round of the singles main draw to No. 36 Hernus Pieters of Georgia, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, but he rebounded to breeze past No. 69 Spencer Wolf of Northwestern, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round of the consolation bracket.

"Olivier played such a close match in the first round, and then he came back and understood the opportunity he had to get big wins and build confidence in the back draw," LSU assistant coach Danny Bryan said. "He came out with a great attitude, got off to a good start and played one of the better matches I have ever seen him play. It was a tremendous performance and hopefully something he can carry into Friday's play."

No. 58 Simpson was one of the final selections for the consolation singles draw, and he did not squander the opportunity as he made quick work of 52nd-ranked Alexis Heugas of Virginia Commonwealth, 6-3, 6-1, in his first-round match.

"Simpson was excited to get the opportunity to play," Bryan said. "He got off to a slow start, falling behind 0-2 in the first set, but he woke up in a big way and played a great match. It was good for him because he has been playing really well, and he is making the most of getting that spot in the consolation draw."

In the first round of main draw doubles, No. 24 Boris Arias and Simpson lost to Virginia's Alex Domijan and Harrison Richmond in a tight match, 8-6.

"It was their first time playing together and they came out with a high intensity and played well," Bryan said. "We aren't where we want to be yet, but they stayed focus and brought great energy to the match. They just need to get better each time out."

The duo will take part in the doubles consolation draw that opens play Friday.

In the second round of the singles consolation draw, Borsos will square off against No. 46 Daniel Whitehead of Texas, and Simpson will play No. 21 Jonas Lutjen of Ole Miss. Both matches will begin at 9 a.m.
