TULSA, Okla. – The Baylor men’s tennis tandem of Marko Krickovic and Robert Verzaal lost in the consolation quarterfinals at the ITA All-American Championships on Friday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Krickovic and Verzaal were able to pull off a close victory against their round of 16 opponent from Nebraska, Eric Sock and Andre Stenger, ranked No. 21, 9-7. In their second match however, the Baylor duo was unable to defeat Tennessee’s eighth-ranked duo of John Collins and Hunter Reese, 8-5.
“I am very proud of how Marko and Robert were able to play in this tournament,” assistant coach Dominik Mueller said. “They were able to win five matches. Today, they just lacked focus at times and didn’t execute. They just have to learn to focus the whole time, rather than going up a break then down a break. Overall, it was a great showing from them.”
The pair’s record now stands at 9-3.
The Bears will return to action on Oct. 12 at the Mansfield Futures tournament in Mansfield, Texas and four Bears will compete at the UTSA/ITA Regional Championship in Fort Worth, Texas beginning Oct. 20.
“Regionals are in two weeks,” Mueller said. “All four guys competing in the fall will each have something to improve on. With their ability to make a deep run, Marko (Krickovic) and Robert (Verzaal) are our doubles team. They have great harmony and chemistry together. I hope that they will be able to show that at regionals. Mate (Zsiga) and Julian (Lenz) have some work to do, but they have potential to become our best doubles team. All four of our guys have a chance to go far in the regionals.”
