PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The Baylor women's tennis team lost in singles and grabbed a win in doubles on Friday during the ITA All-American Championships consolation draw at the Riviera Tennis Club.

Sophomore Ema Burgic was defeated in the first round by North Carolina's Whitney Kay, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.

"Ema ran into a really tough opponent today," head coach Joey Scrivano. "Her effort was excellent, and she's played a lot of matches this week. She fought real hard and all the way to the end. She just didn't execute as well in the second and third sets, and at the end of the day, that's what did her in."

To kick off the opening round of doubles play, Burgic and partner Jordaan Sanford defeated USC's Gabriella DeSimone and Zoe Scandalis, 8-2.

"They learned some valuable lessons in that loss to Duke yesterday, and today they made adjustments and did a great job," Scrivano said. "It was a real team effort. To beat a quality team like Scandalis and DeSimone - it's going to take two players really executing, and they really did a great job with that."

The duo will move on to face the third-ranked and 2nd-seeded Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting of California at 1:30 p.m. CST on Saturday.
