TULSA, Okla. – The LSU men’s tennis duo of Chris Simpson and Boris Arias defeated 13th-ranked Diego Acosta and Aaron Dujovne of Purdue, 8-3, in the consolation doubles first round Friday at the ITA All-American Championships at Tulsa’s Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Simpson and Arias, ranked No. 24 nationally, traded games early with the Purdue pair to get out to a 3-2 lead, and then the Tigers broke serve twice to pull away for the 8-3 upset win.

The duo could not maintain the momentum in the second round as they fell, 8-5, to Columbia’s Ashok Narayan and Max Schur.

“Boris and Chris played a good first match with great energy,” LSU assistant coach Danny Bryan said. “We always talk about closing out matches, and I was pleased with how they did that.

“In the next match against Columbia, they didn’t win the big points. There were a lot of breaks of serve on both sides, and we lost a close game at 5-6 that we weren’t able to recover from. We’ll keep getting better.”

Olivier Borsos and Simpson each competed in the consolation singles second round, and neither was able to advance. No. 46 Daniel Whitehead of Texas took down Borsos, 6-4, 6-3, and 21st-ranked Jonas Lutjen of Ole Miss beat Simpson, 6-2, 7-5, to end the tournament for the Tigers.

“We are ready to get back on the practice court and work on the mistakes we made here to be prepared for regionals,” Bryan said. “Overall, at this tournament we saw a lot of good tennis, and we saw our guys compete really hard. We got a lot out of it in the sense that we know exactly what we need to work on to continue to improve moving forward.”

LSU will practice next week in preparation for the ITA Southern Regional hosted by Auburn Oct. 18-22.
