College Tennis News - Gomez, Sarmiento Through To ITA All-American Quarterfinals

The tennis world will remember Emilio Gomez not only for his part in USC's last two NCAA Championship runs, but now also for his resounding upset of the nation's top-ranked player. Gomez drilled No. 1 seed Henrique Cunha of Duke today in the singles Round of 16 at the ITA Men's All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., as he and fellow Trojan junior Ray Sarmiento both advanced to the quarterfinals.

Gomez's big day began with his stunning 6-3, 6-2 defeat of Duke's top-seeded Cuhna. That win launched Gomez into the quarterfinals against another high seed as he faced No. 6 seed Alex Domijan of Virginia.

Sarmiento, meanwhile, bounced back from a tiebreak loss in his first set to roll past Kentucky's Tom Jomby with a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 decision that would put him up against Princeton's Matija Pecotic in the quarters. Petocic had managed a grueling three-set win over USC sophomore Robert Quiroz in the Round of 16 to steal away an all-Trojan quarterfinal matchup. Petocic pulled out a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (11) win over Quiroz for the right to face Sarmiento in tomorrow's quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, USC's doubles run is now done after a tough 9-7 loss taken by No. 6 seeded Quiroz/Sarmiento.
