PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The Baylor women’s tennis tandem of Ema Burgic and Jordaan Sanford fell in the second round of consolation doubles play at the Riviera/ITA All-American on Saturday at the Riviera Tennis Club.
The BU pair, which went 1-2 in their opening tournament, was beaten by third-ranked and second-seeded Annie Goransson and Anett Schutting of California, 8-2.
“That Cal team is really good on paper,” head coach Joey Scrivano said. “The reality though is that we didn’t play with the right mind set today. With Ema having an injury, Jordaan has to carry the load and that didn’t happen today.”
Individually, Burgic wraps up play in the California event with a 6-1 singles record after advancing from the prequalifying all of the way to the main draw.
“Ema is doing what she is capable of doing,” Scrivano said. “She is finally able to be committed to her development. Now the key is for her to build off her success in this tournament and get better. Ema is projected to be a top of the lineup player for us and in the main draw she got beat by one of the elite players in the country. The positive thing is that she knows she has a lot of room for improvement.”
Sanford was beaten in the opening round of pre-qualifying singles play.
“For Jordaan it was an extremely disappointing tournament,” Scrivano said. “She is playing in her comfort zone, instead of doing things the right way. That is really hurting her development right now and it showed tremendously in this tournament.”
The Lady Bears will next be in action on Oct. 19 when they host the USTA/ITA Regional Championships at the Hurd Tennis Center.
