IRVINE, Calif. – The Pepperdine men’s tennis team wrapped the first day at the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championship, and both Finn Tearney and Mousheg Hovhannisyan advanced to the third round in singles.
Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College), ranked #14 in singles and the tournament’s overall top seed, shut out Andrew Carlisle in his first match, 6-0, 6-0. The senior will continue action tomorrow against USC’s Michael Grant in the round of 32.
Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy) made short work of his match against Jacob Johnson of UC Santa Barbara, and won 6-0, 6-3. The senior, who is seeded sixth, is set to face Loyola Marymount’s Nicholas Bjerke tomorrow.
Kento Tanaka-Tamaki (Kihei, Hawaii/St. Anthony Junior-Senior HS) and Damian Gryzelko (London, England/Saddlebrook Preparatory School) lost in their respective opening round matches, but will look to rebound tomorrow in the consolation draw.
The duo will also compete in doubles action, which opens on Saturday. Tearney and Hovhannisyan are also slated to compete alongside one another, and are seeded eighth.
