College Tennis News - Blue Devils Cruise at ITA Regional Championship

Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Blue Devils women’s tennis team went 8-1 on Friday at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. The tournament will continue on Saturday with quarterfinal play of the doubles draw at 9 a.m., followed by second round action in singles at 10 a.m.

In singles play, No.35 Hanna Mar cruised past Nicole Martinez of North Carolina State, 6-4, 6-2, while Senior Mary Clayton and sophomores Ester Goldfeld and Annie Mulholland bested all three of their opponents from Winthrop. No. 44 Clayton downed Andressa Garcia, 6-3, 6-0, while No. 68 Goldfeld dropped Ekin Gunaysu, 6-0, 6-3 and Mulholland, ranked 108th defeated Alice Garcia, 6-4, 6-1. The lone Blue Devil to fall on Friday was junior Marianne Jodoin. In a close match, No. 27 Jodoin was outlasted by Romy Kolzer of Clemson, 7-6 (9), 7-6(3).

The Blue Devils earned a bye in the first round of the doubles main draw, and in the second round both teams showed why they earned high seeds. The tandem of Clayton and Mulholland downed Tristen Dewar and Romy Kolzer of Clemson, 8-2 while the duo of Mar and Goldfeld cruised past Nicole Martinez and Christy Sipes of North Carolina State, 8-0.

In the round of 16, both Blue Devil tandems advanced to the quarterfinals on Saturday after defeating teams from Winthrop. Clayton and Mulholland edged Alice Garcia and Giovanna Portioli, 8-6 to advance, while Mar and Goldfeld dropped Yasmine Alkema and Andressa Garcia, 8-1 to move on. In the quarterfinals on Saturday, Clayton and Mulholland are slated to face McHale and Lyons of North Carolina, while Mar and Goldfeld will play Jansacker/Johnston of Elon.
