WACO, Texas – The Baylor women’s tennis team snagged a win in doubles and two in singles during  the second day of action at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships on Saturday at the Hurd Tennis Center.

The Lady Bears split singles contests, with freshman Victoria Kisialeva and sophomore Ema Burgic moving on to the round of 16. Kisialeva defeated Rice’s Katie Gater, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and will face fourth-ranked Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar of Texas A&M on Sunday.

Burgic will also be moving on to the next round with a victory over Texas A&M’s Anna Mamalat, 7-6(3), 6-3. On Sunday, Burgic will play Texas Tech’s Elizabeth Ullathorne.

“Victoria’s progressing and this tournament has given us the opportunity to get an idea of how she competes, and to confirm or enlighten us on some areas that she needs to improve,” head coach Joey Scrivano said. “Every match that she plays gives us more opportunities to evaluate and figure out if her developmental plan is the right one. It’s been really good that she’s doing well here.

Sophomore Megan Horter was defeated by No. 87 Simona Parajova, 6-4, 6-1. Junior Jordaan Sanford also wasn’t able to get past the round of 32, and fell to Texas A&M’s Stefania Hristov, 6-4, 6-0.

In doubles action, the tandem of Kisialeva and Horter dropped its round of 32 match to Texas A&M’s Cristina Stancu and Stefania Hristov, 8-6.

Meanwhile, Baylor’s other duo, Sanford and Burgic, will play in the round of 16, after notching an 8-3 win against Texas Tech’s Sandra Dynka and Sofya Malysheva. The pair will play SMU’s Hristina Dishkova and Elena Fayner on Sunday.

“Victoria and Megan obviously did some really positive things to put them in a position to win the match,” Scrivano said. “However, their youth and inexperience showed up at some critical times. It’s another learning opportunity, and we will just have to get better from it. I know Jordaan and Ema are capable of playing better than what they’re showing at this tournament. I’m excited to see them raise their level of play tomorrow.”

Play will continue on Sunday at 9 a.m., with one round of doubles and two round of singles play in the main draw. There will be two rounds of doubles and one round of singles in the consolation draw.
