MORAGA, Calif. - Ben McLachlan captured California's first singles title since 2003 at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships when he defeated Santa Clara's John Lamble, 6-2, 6-1, on Wednesday at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex on the Saint Mary's campus. The California junior added the singles title to the regional doubles crown - Cal's fourth in the last five years - he won with his brother and Golden Bear senior Riki McLachlan on Oct. 23 in Moraga.

Cal also collected the team trophy for the most number of wins at the regional, an honor that the Bears have also had four of the last five years.

Former Bear Conor Niland won the regional singles championship in 2003.

McLachlan's victory and the McLachlans' doubles win clinched berths for the Bears in the upcoming USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships.

"It was a tremendous performance by Ben McLachlan," Cal head coach Peter Wright said. "It was fantastic to see Ben play at this high level, starting off with him and his brother Riki winning doubles in a very strong match against a good Saint Mary's team, and then coming back today and winning the singles title in very convincing fashion. It's truly an honor for him to gain entry to national indoors in two weeks in New York City."

The national indoor tournament will take place from Nov. 8-11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
