MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine men’s tennis alumnus Andre Begemann won his first ATP World Tour event over the weekend, teaming up with fellow German Martin Emmrich to claim the doubles title at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Austria.

Begemann, whose current ATP doubles ranking recently jumped to a career-best 70, and Emmrich upset second-seeded Julian Knowle and Filip Polasek, 6-4, 3-6, 10-4 in the title match.

Begemann and Emmrich outlasted two other seeded teams en route to the finals.  They first defeated No. 4 Dustin Brown and Christopher Kas in the first round before downing top-seeded home favorites Jurgen Melzer and Alexander Peya in the semifinals.

While a college student-athlete at Pepperdine, Begemann was an integral part of the 2006 NCAA championship winning team, and clinched the victory for the Waves with a dramatic three-set win over Georgia’s Matic Omerzel in singles.

Following the team championship, Begemann and Scott Doerner reached the NCAA Doubles Championship finals. The duo still holds the Pepperdine record for most dual victories in a singles season with 26.

Begemann, Doerner and the rest of the 2006 team were inducted into the Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame in 2011.

The two-time West Coast Conference Player of the Year (2007, 08) and three-time All-American (2006, 07, 08) is now the second Pepperdine alumni to win the trophy in Vienna. Pepperdine Hall of Famer Brad Gilbert won the singles crown at the Erste Bank Open in 1986.
