COLLEGE STATION, Texas – LSU men’s tennis players Chris Simpson and Stefan Szacinski captured the doubles title Sunday on the final day of the Conference Challenge hosted by Texas A&M at George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
Simpson and Szacinski finished a perfect 3-0 in doubles play during the tournament to win the title, including an 8-5 victory Sunday against Illinois’ Jared Hiltzik and Alex Jesse.
“It was good for them to step up and have a breakout tournament by beating some good teams this weekend,” LSU head coach Jeff Brown said. “Overall, I was pleased with their effort, and these guys showed a lot of positives in their play.”
Tam Trinh finished the tournament on a strong note as he combined with Roger Anderson to knock off Texas A&M’s Jackson Withrow and Alberto Bautista, 9-8, and Trinh defeated SMU’s Mischa Nowicki in singles, 5-7, 6-0, 6-2.
LSU concluded its fall season and will continue preparation for the spring dual season that will begin in January.
“We were able to accomplish a lot during these tournaments,” Brown said. “We are looking forward to the next two weeks of practice and finishing the fall strong as we head into dual play.”
The Tigers will open the spring season at the Key Biscayne Collegiate Invitational from Jan. 6-8 in Key Biscayne, Fla., before competing in the first dual match of the season against Southern Miss on Jan. 21 at Dub Robinson Stadium.
