OXFORD, Miss. - The Ole Miss duo of Nik Scholtz and Jonas Lutjen will battle the nation's top collegiate tennis players later this week at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
The prestigious event, the second of three collegiate tennis majors, begins Thursday, Nov. 8 and runs through Sunday, Nov. 11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The National Indoor features some of the best players in both singles and doubles.
Gaining automatic entry into the tournament are champions from the USTA/ITA Division I Regional Championships held across the country in October, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl, and the consolation champions, doubles finalists and singles quarterfinalists from the ITA Men's and ITA/Riviera Women's All-American Championships.
The men's singles field is loaded with talent this year as seven of the top 10 players from the Campbell/ITA Men's Preseason Rankings will be competing for the ITA's final and most prestigious national title of the fall. Not only is the field deep, it is also diverse as 27 colleges and universities will be represented in the prestigious 32 player singles draw, the most since 2009.
Scholtz, ranked No. 5 in the nation in singles, punched his ticket to the tournament with a victory at the USTA Southern Regional over Mississippi State's Romain Bogaerts . This will be Scholtz's first appearance at the National Indoor.
Senior Jonas Lutjen booked his trip to New York by winning the consolation singles prize over Ohio State's Connor Smith at the ITA All-American. Lutjen, the No. 21 ranked player in the nation, appeared at the National Indoor last year in the doubles draw.
Ole Miss has been represented in the doubles draw of the National Indoor the past two years, with Lutjen and Johan Backstrom in last year's field and Chris Thiemann and Marcel Thiemann in 2010.
