Rolling Hills, Calif. – Baylor women’s tennis tallied five wins during the first day of the Jack Kramer Club Invite in Rolling Hills, Calif.

The doubles tandem of Jordaan Sanford and Megan Horter opened the day with an 8-2 win over San Diego’s Cara Brown and Stephanie Hoffpauir. Ema Burgic and Victoria Kisialeva earned a first-round bye, and will play Saturday morning.

“They did some really good things on the doubles court, and they were just showing us that they were improving,” head coach Joey Scrivano said.

After receiving first-round byes, Burgic and Sanford both notched single victories to move on to the next round. Burgic moves on to the quarterfinals after winning a showcase match in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-0, over University of California-Santa Barbara’s April Scatliffe. She will face Catherine Harrison from UCLA on Saturday.

“Ema played really well today,” Scrivano said. “She was focused and executed really well. It was a good start for her.”

Sanford also defeated Loyola Marymout’s April Bisharat, 7-6, 6-3, and will meet UCLA’s Courtney Dolehide in the next round.

“Jordaan is just trying to do the right things right now, and she finds a way to win when she’s not playing her best tennis,” Scrivano said. “Today was another great example of that.”

Horter out-dueled UCLA’s Holly Fleming in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-0, and defeated seventh-seeded Lilly Kimbell of Georgia, 6-0, 6-0. USD’s third-seeded Laura Claus will be Horter’s next opponent.

“Megan played fairly solid today, and it’s just really nice to see someone that has worked as hard as Megan reap the rewards of all her hard work,” Scrivano said.

The only loss of the day was from Kisialeva, who was defeated by Stacy Yam of UCSB, 4-6, 0-6, and will continue play in consolation rounds.

The Lady Bears will continue play at the Jack Kramer Club Invitational on Saturday morning.
