College Tennis News - Burgic advances to singles final in straight sets.

ROLLING HILLS, Calif. - Baylor women's tennis team completed a second successful day of play at the Jack Kramer Invitational on Saturday at the Jack Kramer Tennis Club.

In singles action, the event's No. 1 seed, Ema Burgic, opened her day with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over eighth seeded Catherine Harrison of UCLA. The win pushed Burgic into the semifinals where she triumphed over No. 3 seed Laura Claus of San Diego, 6-4, 6-4.

"Ema didn't player her best tennis today, but she did a good job finding a way to win," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "That is always the sign of a great player. I expect her to execute better tomorrow and learn from some of the adversity she faced today."

The BU sophomore will now face Kaitlin Ray of UCLA in the finals of the 32-player singles draw on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. (CT).

Ray knocked out Burgic's teammate Jordaan Sanford, the No. 4 seed, in the semifinal round to setup the final match. Sanford fell to the Bruin star 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, after having downed UCLA's Courtney Dollhide in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-0.

"Jordaan is definitely getting better," Scrivano said. "Unfortunately, she just lost a tough one in the semis to Ray. I can see progress in her game and she is definitely making some good strides forward."

Megan Horter dropped her quarterfinal match 0-6, 7-6, 10-4 to Claus.

On the doubles side, Sanford and Horter recorded an 8-5 win over Georgia's third-seeded duo of MacKenzie Craft and Lilly Kimball to advance to the semifinals. The BU duo will now take on Miya Jin and Claudia Razzeto of Loyola-Marymount on Sunday.

Baylor's other doubles tandem of Burgic and Victoria Kisialeva dispatched of Erica Cano and Stacy Yam of UC-Santa Barbara, 8-6, and will now tangle with Holly Fleming and Ray of UCLA in the semifinals on Sunday.

"It was a pleasant surprise to have our two doubles teams in the semifinals," Scrivano said. "The team of Sanford and Horter played exceptionally well to beat Georgia this morning. They are a team we may put together in the Spring, so they are doing really well."

The doubles semifinal action kicks off things on Sunday at the Jack Kramer Invitational at 11 a.m. (CT).
