FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y./TEMPE, Ariz. - Anett Schutting captured a singles final berth at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in New York on Saturday, though a potential all-Cal championship never materialized as teammate Zsofi Susanyi fell in the semifinals at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center. Meanwhile, a pair of Golden Bears lost in the singles semifinal round at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Arizona.
Schutting - the nation's 22nd-ranked player - defeated Florida's No. 32 Sofie Oyen, 7-6 (5), 6-4, to advance at national indoors, while Susanyi - a Cal sophomore ranked No. 5 - lost to third-ranked and fifth-seeded Robin Anderson of UCLA, 6-1, 6-2.
In Tempe, freshmen Klara Fabikova and Lynn Chi the won their singles quarterfinals - with fourth-seeded Fabikova beating junior teammate Alice Duranteau, 6-3, 6-2, and second-seeded Chi knocking off Arizona State's Stephanie Vlad, 7-5, 7-5. Top-seeded Cal senior Tayler Davis lost in the quarters to Michigan's Ronit Yurovsky, 7-5, 7-5.
But in the semifinals, Yurovsky eliminated Fabikova, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 6-3, and ASU's Desirae Krawczyk beat Chi, 6-1, 6-4.
In singles consolation matches, sophomore Laura Posylkin topped San Diego's Idil Haciraifoglu, 6-1, 6-2, in the Sparky first-round back draw. But, in the Maroon draw second-round consolation bracket, junior Kelly Chui lost to Ohio State's Fidan Manashirova, 6-4, 6-1, and sophomore Cecilia Estlander dropped a 6-4, 6-0, match to Michigan's Kristy Dodge.
In doubles round-robin action, Cal won two matches, with Davis-Fabikova prevailing over Ohio State's Nikki Flower-Gabby Steele, 8-2, and Chui-Posylkin beating USD's Haciraifoglu-Alexandra Victorsson, 8-1. The Cal pair of Chi-Duranteau lost to BYU's Morgan Anderson-Mackenna Maddox, 8-5.
Both the national indoor and ASU tournaments conclude on Sunday.
