CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Senior Mary Clayton and junior Marianne Jodoin concluded the women’s tennis fall season by winning the finals of their respective brackets on Sunday at the Kitty Harrison Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C. The Blue Devils tallied a 10-2 singles record this weekend, as well as a 2-1 slate in doubles action.
In the finals of the white draw, No. 27 Jodoin took an early lead against Ellie Ball of Marshall and cruised to an easy 6-1, 6-0 win on Sunday. Jodoin, a native of Varennes, Quebec, owns a 10-6 record this fall in singles play.
In the final match of the blue draw, No. 44 Clayton dropped the first set to Lauren McHale of North Carolina, but rallied to win the second set, 7-5(2). Clayton continued her good play in the third and final set, and eventually edged McHale, 5-7, 7-6 (2), 6-4. With the undefeated weekend, Clayton now holds an 11-5 record this fall.
In the third place match of the blue draw, sophomore Annie Mulholland lost the first set to Tessa Lyons of North Carolina, and was down 3-0 in the second set before rallying to tie the set at 3-3. Despite the surge, Mulholland eventually fell to Lyons, 7-6 (4), 6-3. Mulholland, a native of Portland, Ore., concludes her fall with a 6-7 singles record and a 9-5 record in doubles play.
The Blue Devils conclude the fall season with a 46-24 record in singles play, and a 20-8 slate in doubles play. Duke will return to the courts to kick off their spring season at the Hawaii Invitational Jan. 9-10.
