TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women’s tennis team wrapped up the fall portion of its season on Sunday with Alexa Guarachi and Antonia Foehse playing in their respective singles consolation draw finals. Guarachi, ranked 36th in the nation, would drop a hard-fought 7-6(4), 7-5 decision to No. 4 Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar of Texas A&M at the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, while Foehse won her match by default against Memphis’ Caroline Wegner at the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classic.
“I thought we had a very strong showing at the National Indoors,” said Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz. “I am very encouraged with the progress that the team has made overall. I thought Alexa and Mary Anne played with a lot of confidence and authority in New York. Alexa is really starting to find her stride and built one good tournament on top of another this fall. She had opportunities today, and the match certainly could have gone either way. Together, Alexa and Mary Anne are playing some commanding doubles. They lost in the semifinals to the eventual champions and No. 1 team in the nation. They are doing a great job of leading us at the top of the lineup. We are looking for big things from them in the coming season.”
The Crimson Tide will pick back up with match play in January when it heads to the Hawai’i Invitational in Kona.
