University of Florida Sofie Oyen lost in the semifinals of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in Flushing, N.Y., while Alexandra Cercone, Caroline Hitimana and Brianna Morgan each reached the semifinals of the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Lakewood, Fla., on Saturday.
Oyen dropped a tough 7-6 (5), 6-4 decision to California’s 22nd-ranked Anett Schutting at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center in the national event. The Gator junior had her chances in both sets during the match but Schutting stepped up when she needed to and advanced to the final of the collegiate Grand Slam.
“Sofie played great all tournament,” UF head coach Roland Thornqvist said. “She showed great improvement both in skill and mentally and ends the fall on a high note.”
At the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic, Cercone earned a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory against Alabama’s Maya Jansen and earned a semifinal date with Memphis’ Liza Tymchenko on Sunday at the Lakewood Ranch Golf & Country Club.
Hitimana also earned a three-set win, downing Mississippi State’s Georgiana Patrasc, 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 and will face freshman teammate Morgan, who advanced to the semifinals after a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Notre Dame’s Brittany Sanders.
In doubles action, Cercone and Morgan won three matches and reached the finals, collecting wins against Tennessee’s Fotopoulos and Grace, 8-6, Alabama’s Jansen and Foehse, 8-5, and East Tennessee’s Choo and Gerbasi, 8-5. They will take on Memphis’ Collins and Grey in the championship match on Sunday.
The Memphis pair reached the final after its 8-6 win against Florida’s Hitimana and Olivia Janowicz in the semifinal. Hitimana and Janowicz advanced to the round of four with an 8-5 win against Alabama’s Zabor and Maynetto and an 8-5 victory over Tennessee’s Williams and Henderson.
