FLUSHING, N.Y. -- USC junior Ray Sarmiento had a tough draw in his quarterfinal bout at today's ITA National Indoor Championships in New York. After a morning win in the Round of 16, #9 Sarmiento was up against Pepperdine's #3 Sebastian Fanselow in the quarterfinals, and Fanselow was up to the challenge.
Sarmiento's day began with a powerful 6-4, 6-3 take-down of Virginia newcomer Mac Styslinger in today's single Round of 16. That put #9 Sarmiento up against the #3 Fanselow in the quarterfinals, and Fanselow was able to earn the right to move into tomorrow's semifinals with a 6-1, 6-2 decision over the Trojan junior.
Meanwhile, USC's sophomore doubles tandem of Yannick Hanfmann and Eric Johnson were in action in the consolation doubles draw, going 1-1 today.
