FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - The Virginia men's tennis team opened play Thursday at the ITA Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Cavaliers, who led the nation with four singles and two doubles entries, had three singles players and one doubles team advance on the opening day.

In singles, top-seeded Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) continued his unbeaten fall with a 6-3, 6-2 opening round win over Esben Hess-Olesen of North Carolina. He will play Ben McLachlan of Cal in the round of 16 on Friday.

No. 6 seed Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) opened the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Ashok Narayana of Columbia. He plays Vlad Stefan of Michigan in the round of 16.

First-year Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) started his run in the event by upsetting the No. 3 seed, Matija Pecotic of Princeton, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. He plays Raymond Sarmiento of USC in the round of 16.

Fellow first-year Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.) fell 6-3, 7-6(2) in the first round to Adrien Berkowitz of Tyler Junior College, the ITA Small School champion.

In doubles, the team of Jenkins and Styslinger, seeded No. 3, edged the Columbia duo of Narayana and Max Schnur 9-8(4) in the second round after a first round bye. They meet the McLachlan brothers, Ben and Riki, of Cal in the quarterfinals.

Domijan and Richmond also had a first round bye, but lost in the second round to Hernus Pieters and Ben Wagland of Georgia, 8-5, in the second round.
