Several Gators in Action in Final Events of the 2012 Fall Season

Members of the Florida men’s tennis team are in action this weekend at two separate events that will wrap up the 2012 fall season for the Gators. Junior Florent Diep (Paris, France) is in Flushing, N.Y. competing in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, while four players are in Bradenton, Fla., playing in the Dick Vitale Clay Court Classis.
 
Diep lost in the first round of the main draw at the National Indoors, falling to Baylor’s Julian Lenz, 6-2, 6-4. He bounced back with a win over Texas’ Daniel Whitehead, 7-6 (6), 6-2, in the consolation draw on Friday. In Bradenton, all four Gators advanced to the Quarterfinals of the singles draw. Senior Billy Federhofer (North Miami) beat USF’s Joao Souza in the opening round, 6-0, 6-2, before pulling out a three-set win over Minnesota’s Juan Pablo Ramirez, 3-6, 6-0, 7-6.
 
Junior Mike Alford (Tampa) and redshirt freshmen Thomas Proisy (Saint Nom La Breteche, France) and Gordon Watson (Naples) all had byes in the first round. Alford outlasted Minnesota’s Rueben Weber, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, and Proisy took down Furman’s Andrew Mellow, 6-3, 6-7, 6-1. Watson beat Princeton’s Dan Richardson, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, to reach the Quarterfinals.
 
In doubles, Federhofer and Watson reached the semifinals with an 8-3 win over Miami’s Jack Murphy and Henrique Tsukamoto. Alford and Proisy beat FAU’s Robert Dubuque and Matthew Sanberg, 9-7, but lost to Pepperdine’s Kento Tanaka-Tamaki and Finn Tierney, 8-1, in the Quarterfinals.
