DURHAM, N.C. – Senior Henrique Cunha and sophomore Raphael Hemmeler garnered Ronald McDonald House Charities Duke Student-Athletes of the Week honors after taking the doubles title at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships Sunday in Flushing, N.Y.
Cunha and Hemmeler, the 16th-ranked duo in the country, defeated 35th-ranked Hernus Pieters and Ben Wagland of Georgia in the finals, 6-4, 6-2 to become only the second Blue Devil pair to win the tournament in the history of the program. During the week, Cunha and Hemmeler defeated the eighth and 35th-ranked teams on their way to taking the title. The team was able to get into the field at the prestigious event after winning the doubles title at the ITA Carolina Regional last month. The tournament caps off a strong fall for the dynamic duo during which they earned a 12-1 overall record and an undefeated 4-0 mark against ranked opponents.
