Duke Tennis Announces 2013 Spring Slate

DURHAM, N.C. – Duke men’s tennis head coach Ramsey Smith announced the spring dual season schedule Thursday, with the Blue Devils scheduled to play 17 matches against teams listed in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings last year.

“Our team is especially excited for this upcoming spring season,” Smith said. “We have a great schedule, and thanks to the continued support of the Hills family we are kicking off our spring season with a week in Hawaii.”

The Blue Devils will open the spring campaign against Hawaii at the Rainbow Warrior Challenge in Honolulu, Hawaii on Jan. 9. The team will begin the home portion of its schedule at Ambler Tennis Stadium against Elon on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 1 p.m. and will face UNC-Charlotte on Sunday, Jan. 20.

The annual ITA Kick-Off weekend will be held Jan. 25-26, with the Blue Devils will once again serving as one of 15 host sites. Middle Tennessee State, Northwestern and Virginia Tech will come to Durham with to contend for a trip to the ITA Team Indoors in Seattle, Wash., on Feb. 15-18.

Duke will travel to Champaign, Ill., the site for this year’s NCAA Championships, to take on Illinois on Feb. 1. After taking on the reigning Big Ten tournament champions, the team will travel to South Bend, Ind., to face the Irish on Sunday, Feb. 3. After returning home to take on Tennessee on Feb. 8, the Blue Devils will than host a double-header against Michigan and NC Central on Sunday, Feb. 10.

The team will make a trip to Berkeley, Calif., to take on California on Sunday, March 10, before returning home to begin Atlantic Coast Conference play against Wake Forest on Friday, March 15. Trips to rival North Carolina and Virginia, the NCAA runner-up from a year ago, highlight the remaining portions of the ACC schedule. Duke will also make trips to Virginia Tech, Clemson and Georgia Tech to close out its ACC road slate.

In conference play, the home schedule features matches against Wake Forest and Florida State. The Blue Devils will conclude regular season play with three consecutive home matches against Miami, Boston College and NC State. The match against the Wolfpack will mark senior night and the final home match for senior captain Henrique Cunha.

The ACC Tournament is scheduled to be played from April 25-28 at Cary Tennis Park in Cary, N.C.

Duke compiled a 76-32 singles record in the fall, led by Cunha, who posted a record of 12-3. The doubles fall season was highlighted by Cunha and sophomore Raphael Hemmeler’s doubles title at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships last weekend in Flushing, N.Y.
