NORMAN, Okla.-- OU men’s tennis head coach John Roddick announced today that Vasile Alexandru Ghilea (Piatra Neamt, Romania) has signed a National Letter of Intent to become an Oklahoma Sooner in the fall of 2013.

“We are tremendously excited to sign a player of Alex’s level,” Roddick said. “He is going to be a great asset on this team and we really look forward to having him as part of the Sooner family.”

Ghilea has a current ATP ranking of 1,024. He has been climbing the ATP ranks in recent years . In 2010, his year-end ATP ranking was 1,361. By the end of 2011, he climbed to 1,176. His current ATP ranking is another 152 spots higher in the rankings.

Ghilea’s ability has already been displayed to an OU connection. In September, Ghilea beat former Sooner All-American Andrei Daescu at the  Brasov Challenger in Brasov, Romania.

Ghilea has 18 match wins on the year. Since 2008, he has collected 41 career match wins.
