ATHENS-----Spain’s Silvia Garcia has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend the University of Georgia, Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace announced Wednesday.

Garcia, a native of Madrid, is the 4th-ranked junior player and the 26th-ranked player in Spain.

“We are extremely excited to have Silvia join us this spring,” said head coach Jeff Wallace. “She’s going to be a valuable addition to an already great team.”

Her career is highlights by winning the Under-16 European Championship and the Under-14 and Under-16 Spanish Championships. Most recently, she finished runner-up at the Under-18 Spanish Championships. Garcia was also a semi-finalist in the Under-16 division of the Orange Bowl, an annual tennis tournament in Florida hosted by the USTA.

Garcia, the daughter of Pedro Garcia and Begoña Jimenez, trains at the Madrid Tennis Federation and is coached by Ana Alcazar.

Garcia will join the Bulldogs in January for the 2013 dual match season.

“I really want to be part of this team,” said Garcia. “The girls and the coaches have been very nice to me and I’m sure it's going to be a great year. I'm so excited and I can't wait to get to Athens.”
