College Tennis News - Andy Nguyen, Hu Named to All-Tournament Teams in Fall Finale

With a pair of wins in singles action at the Tribe Invite, Andy Nguyen improved his individual record to 7-4 (Gil Talbot).

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Senior Andy Nguyen garnered All-Tournament singles team honors and was also selected to the doubles team with partner freshman Nicky Hu as the Harvard men's tennis team concluded the fall portion of its schedule at the Tribe Invite hosted by William and Mary this weekend.

Andy Nguyen finished with a 2-1 record in singles, and he and Hu posted a 3-1 mark in doubles during the three-day competition.

The Crimson went 5-2 with three sweeps against the host school in singles play on day one of the event. Freshman Kelvin Lam cruised to a 6-2, 6-3 victory against John Banks, while Alex Steinroeder downed Ben Hoogland 6-1, 6-4. Aaron Chaffee hung with Nicholas Mahlangu, but the freshman prevailed on tiebreakers in both sets to earn the win. Henry Steer also picked up a straight-set victory over Zach Braig.

Playing in the top-flight singles draw, No. 104 Denis Nguyen pushed nationally-ranked No. 43 Jamie Whiteford to a tiebreak point in the third set but ultimately lost.

Harvard owned a 3-1 record against the Tribe in doubles action, which included a dominating 8-2 victory over Anton Anderson and Scott Huang by Steer and Shaun Chaudhuri. The duos of captain Andy Nguyen and Hu and Steinroeder and Mahlangu also bested William and Mary opponents.

Steer continued to have success on Saturday, edging Chaffe in a marathon decisive third set, which he won, 17-15.

Denis Nguyen found himself pitted against another nationally-ranked opponent, No. 24 Greg Anderson of Notre Dame. He jumped out to an early lead with a 6-2 win in the first set. The next two frames were thrillers, but the sophomore dropped both on tiebreak points.

Andy Nguyen and Hu won both of their doubles matches Saturday, including a 9-8 (4) victory in a competitive contest with Notre Dame's Greg Andrews and Spencer Talmedge.

Six Crimson tallied singles wins on Sunday, as Harvard compiled an impressive 6-1 record on the final day of the Tribe Invite. After dropping the first set to Albert Ochagavia, Andy Nguyen rallied to claim the next two on tiebreak points to clinch the match. Hu and Chaudhuri retired their opponents, both from ODU, in straight sets, while Steinroeder and Steer prevailed in three. Mahlangu defeated Ryan Bandy of Notre Dame, 8-7, and teamed up with Steinroeder for an 8-4 win in doubles to round out an impressive finish for Harvard.

The Crimson is off until Jan. 18, when it welcomes Boston College, Marist and Fordham to the Murr Center for the Harvard Winter Invite. The squad will see both Notre Dame and Old Dominion this spring, as it faces the Irish in the ITA Kick-Off Jan. 25 and hosts the Monarchs Feb. 3 at 2:30 p.m.
