WACO, Texas - Members of the 15th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team won three singles matches and two doubles contests on the first day of action at the HEB Invitational on Friday.

"Today was a good starting point for us," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We are definitely a work in progress. It is nice to get out there and compete against some outside competition."

The doubles matches were contested in the newly built Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center, while Baylor's singles matches were played outdoors at the Hurd Tennis Center.

In doubles action, Ema Burgic and Victoria Kisialeva blew past Elena Kordolaimi and Dionne Sanders of Houston, 8-2. Teammates Jordaan Sanford and Megan Horter then got past the Houston duo of Celia Fraser and Maja Kazimieruk, 8-3.

In their first match as Baylor players Kiah Generette and Alex Leatu fell to Charlotte Phillips and Rocia Martin Fernand, 8-6.

The Lady Bears continued to play well in singles action. Burgic, ranked No. 16 in the country, dispatched of Malena Gordo of Stephen F. Austin, 6-0, 6-2.

Leatu picked up a win in her first singles match with a 6-2, 6-2 win vs. Margot de Haan of SFA.

"Alex has been through a lot with injuries," Scrivano said. "For her to come out and have a straight-set win is huge. She has a long road ahead of her, but today was a good start."

Horter closed out the day for BU with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Julia Lorca of Stephen F. Austin.

The Lady Bears will be back in action on Saturday for the second day of competition at the HEB Invitational. Doubles action gets underway at the Hurd Tennis Center at 11 a.m. with singles action to follow.

"Now we will have a chance to meet with the team and go over some of the things we need to improve on," Scrivano said. "We should play better tomorrow."
