CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The chilly first day of the Miami Spring Invite is in the books at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center and the ninth-ranked Hurricanes hold a narrow lead over their highly ranked guests.
The Canes took four of their seven singles matches against No. 26 Vanderbilt and two of three doubles sets against No. 11 Texas.
Miami's top-ranked student-athletes, No. 51 Kelsey Laurente and No. 57 Lina Lileikite, only needed straight sets to defeat their Commodore foes. Out of the No. 2 position, Lileikite easily handled 102nd-ranked Courtney Colton, 6-0, 6-2. Laurente won her match against No. 115 Frances Altkick, 6-4, 7-6.
Freshman Clementina Riobueno battled to a tie-break win in the first set over Georgina Sellyn then closed out her opponent in impressive fashion with a 6-0 win in the second.
At the seventh position, junior Brittany Dubins dropped only one point in a 6-0, 6-1 win over Maggie Leavell.
The day started with doubles action and Lileikite and her partner Stephanie Wagner opened the day with an 8-5 victory over Texas' Aeriel Ellis and Lina Padegimaite. The second doubles win belonged to the duo of Dubins and Laurente, 8-6 over Elizabeth Begley and Juliana Gajic.
Miami ended the day with 32 points, just ahead Texas A&M's 31. Texas and Vanderbilt enter Saturday with 27 and 24 points respectively.
The second day of the invite will follow the same format and will begin at 9 a.m.
MIAMI SPRING INVITE FORMAT OF PLAY
There will be no team scoring at this weekend's event, as everyone is competing as an individual.
Each team will play three rounds of doubles and three rounds of singles. There will be eight flights in singles and four flights in doubles. Each day will consist of eight doubles matches and 16 singles matches. The third set will be played to completion in singles. Points will be allotted for each win based on the following decreasing point value to determine the champion (singles and doubles) at the end of the weekend.
Win at No. 1 position -- 8 points
Win at No. 2 position -- 7 points
Win at No. 3 position -- 6 points
Win at No. 4 position -- 5 points
Win at No. 5 position -- 4 points
Win at No. 6 position -- 3 points
Win at No. 7 position -- 2 points
