BERKELEY - California welcomed its second home meet of the season in style, with the seventh-ranked Golden Bears sweeping past Fresno State and Santa Clara on the first day of their Cal Winter Invitational on a sunny Friday at the Hellman Tennis Complex and Channing Tennis Courts. The Bears won all six singles matches against No. 60 Fresno State and two singles matches against Santa Clara and captured all four doubles matches against the Broncos.

Seventh-ranked Zsofi Susanyi led the charge in the Cal Winter Invitational, losing just one game in a 6-0, 6-1, rout of Fresno State's Melissa McQueen. The sophomore is 4-0 in early 2013, and has not lost a set in the New Year. She later teamed with freshman Klara Fabikova to beat Santa Clara's Katie Le - the 26th-ranked singles player - and Jessica Agra, 8-2, on court one at Hellman.

Also at Hellman, Cal junior Anett Schutting, the nation's ninth-ranked player, topped FSU's Aishwarya Agrawal, 6-4, 6-1; 109th-ranked freshman Lynn Chi dropped the Bulldogs' Rana Sherif, 6-3, 6-3, senior Tayler Davis defeated Sophie Watts, 6-1, 6-3; sophomore Cecilia Estlander beat Anne Susdorf, 6-2, 6-2; and Fabikova knocked off Biana Modoc, 6-4, 6-0. At Channing, junior Kelly Chui quickly dispatched SCU's Carolina O'Haren, 6-0, 6-1, and sophomore Laura Posylkin defeated the Broncos' Charlotte Newell, 6-0, 6-3.

Along with the Susanyi/Fabikoiva result in doubles, Schutting paired with Chi to make quick work of Santa Clara's Chelby Cooke/Stephanie Skaras, 8-1; Davis/Posylkin beat Carolina O'Haren/Nikki Wolny, 8-3; and, over at the Channing courts, Estlander/Chui beat Alex Zaniewski/Kelly Lamble, 8-4.

"It was definitely a good first day," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "All the girls played well today. Tomorrow will definitely be more of a test with (No. 42) Saint Mary's in singles. And then with two of these teams playing at our kickoff weekend next weekend, it's a good first look for us."

Saint Mary's and Fresno State will join Cal and No. 50 UNLV in next week's ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Berkeley.

After that event and the Feb. 8-11 ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Virginia, Cal opens the dual season at home against UCLA on Feb. 22.

"The goal for us is to play as well on the road as at home," Augustus said, "but it's exciting for the team to get back on the courts and inch closer to team-dual matches. We're working on things as a team to get ready for that. It's an exciting time. They really love this time of year - it's non-stop and very busy but a lot of fun. They're happy to get back on the home courts."

Day two of the Cal Winter Invitational begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with Cal taking on Saint Mary's in singles at 10 a.m. and playing Fresno State in doubles at 12:30 p.m. In other action, WCC rivals Saint Mary's and Santa Clara play in doubles at 12:30 p.m., while the Broncos take on the Bulldogs at 2 p.m. in singles. Most of the matches will be held at Hellman, with a few taking place at the Channing courts.
