CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The ninth-ranked University of Miami women's tennis team picked up five singles wins in the second day of competition at the Miami Spring Invite at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Hurricanes top-ranked player in the preseason at No. 51, freshman Kelsey Laurente showed grit in defeating Texas A&M 45th-ranked Cristina Stancu, 6-1, 7 (5)-6.
Another freshman, Deborah Suarez battled a higher ranked opponent and came out on top. The Weston Fla., native took the Aggies' Wen Sun to three sets, finally defeating the nation's No. 82 player, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2. Suarez played earlier in the day as well, capturing a pro-set match over Anna Mamalat, 8-1.
"We made some big steps forward as a program today," head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. "We saw some incredible tennis from our players, but most importantly, some incredible fight. Now we need to turn it around tomorrow morning and get ready for some more great tennis."
Ranked No. 92 in the country, freshman Stephanie Wagner won in straight sets over Stefania Hristov, 6-2, 6-4. The final singles win of the day came from junior Brittany Dubins, a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Mamalat.
After a four-and-a-half hour rain delay, the day began with doubles action and the Miami duo of Lilekite and Wagner raced to a 8-3 win at the No. 1 position over Vanderbilt's Lauren Mira and Marie Casares.
After two days of the Miami Spring Invite, the Canes sit in second place with 58 points, while Texas A&M leads with 62. Texas and Vanderbilt round out the standings with 57 and 51 points respectively.
The third day of the invite will follow the same format and will begin at 8 a.m.
MIAMI SPRING INVITE FORMAT OF PLAY
There will be no team scoring at this weekend's event, as everyone is competing as an individual.
Each team will play three rounds of doubles and three rounds of singles. There will be eight flights in singles and four flights in doubles. Each day will consist of eight doubles matches and 16 singles matches. The third set will be played to completion in singles. Points will be allotted for each win based on the following decreasing point value to determine the champion (singles and doubles) at the end of the weekend.
