THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Fourteenth-ranked California split its final singles matches and dropped a doubles match on Sunday at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup at the Sherwood Country Club.
In the singles backdraw, Golden Bear sophomore Nikhil Jayashankar defeated Stanford's Denis Lin, 6-2, 0-6, 10-6, and freshman Mads Engsted beat the Cardinal's Trey Strobel, 6-3, 7-5, while freshman Wyatt Houghton lost to Stanford's Jamin Ball, 6-1, 6-1, and freshman Jack Sanford fell to UCLA's Ryoto Tachi, 7-5, 7-6(4).
In doubles, Jayashankar/Sanford lost in the consolation draw semifinals to Stanford's Lin/Daniel Ho, 8-3.
Cal next hosts No. 20 Michigan, No. 36 Santa Clara and No. 38 Boise State in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend from Jan. 25-26 in Berkeley.
