The No. 17 Nebraska women's tennis team (1-0,0-0 Big Ten) host their in-state rivals the Creighton Bluejays on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 4 p.m. The Huskers look to notch on another win after trampling the Eastern Michigan Eagles in a 7-0 sweep for their first match of the season. Now sitting 

 

Weatherholt is looking to have the juice back in her following a knee surgery in 2012. Already notched at fourth on the list of career combined wins (156) for the Huskers, Weatherholt needs only 25 more victories, following the Eastern Michigan match, in singles and doubles combined to topple the number one spot (181), held currently by former comrade and 2012 graduate Madeleine Geibert.

 

Veresova had a stellar first showing against the Eagles playing at the No. 1 position in both singles and doubles. Paired with Weatherholt, the duo led the doubles portion of the match defeating Nino Mebuke and Klara Supejova (EMU) 8-3.

 

Huskers Add Two Freshmen To The Roster

The Huskers add two new players to their roster to come to a total of eight players replacing the two lost graduates Geibert and Holmberg. Joining the team are Maggy Lehmicke and Lauren Wagner. Lehmicke, a native of Kirkland, Wash., played tennis for Chrysalis School and Northwest High Performance during her pre-college career is not a stranger to the court. Lehmicke was decorated as the No. 74 player nationally in high school  and the No. 2 player in the Northwest Region and State of Washington alike. Wagner, a native of Roslyn Heights, N.Y., trained at the Weil Tennis Academy in Ojai, Calif., participating in various national tournaments. Wagner chose Nebraska stating that she loves the coaches, the current players, the campus and the idea of Nebraska athletics that academics are important. Head Coach Scott Jacobson believes both players will be a tremendous addition to the team individually as both a player and a person.

 

Nebraska in the National Rankings

The Huskers remain in the top 25 to heading in to face off against Creighton sitting at No. 17 nationally in the ITA Division I Women's Tennis Rankings. The school's current record for highest national ranking is 16th achieved last season before heading to the NCAA Tournament. Nebraska will make a push to surpass this mark and ascend the ranks.

 

The Huskers are the third-highest ranked Big Ten team, falling only to No. 13 Northwestern and No. 16 Michigan. Illinois sits at No. 24 marking a total of four Big Ten teams in the top 25. Only two Big Ten teams didn't make the ITA rankings, being, Iowa and Michigan State, which makes it a total of ten teams from the Big Ten to make the cut rounded out by No. 27 Purdue, No. 41 Minnesota, No. 49 Indiana, No. 50 Penn State, No. 57 Ohio State, and bottom of the pole No. 75 Wisconsin.

 

Looking Ahead

Nebraska will host the ITA Kick-Off Weekend before hitting the road to face their first Big Ten conference opponent of the season. NU will welcome Tennessee, Notre Dame, and Georgia Tech to town for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 27 at 10 a.m.Following the Kick-Off event, the Huskers will face their first Big Ten opponent Ohio State on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 11 a.m.

The Creighton Bluejays will travel to Lincoln this week to face the Huskers at the Nebraska Tennis Center. The Bluejays square off with Nebraska on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 4 p.m. before heading to Iowa City, Iowa to take on Iowa Friday, Feb. 8 at 5 p.m.

Head Coach Tom Lilly and his wife, assistant coach Jean Lilly, lead the Bluejays into their 16th season at the helm of the program.
