ATHENS, Ga. --- Retired Colonel Merritt B. Pound, Jr., a 1955 graduate of the University of Georgia and former men's tennis letterman and team captain, passed away Thursday at age 78.
A native Athenian and third generation UGA graduate ('55), Colonel Pound spent 28 years as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and later returned to the university as Professor and Head of the Air Force ROTC. He played four years of varsity tennis from 1952-55 and was captain of Dan Magill's first team in 1955, his senior season. He was an SEC singles semifinalist in 1954 and Georgia collegiate singles and doubles champion in 1955.
A lifelong Bulldog fan, Colonel Pound witnessed his first Georgia Football game in 1938 at age four and only missed six games since he retired in 1983. While in college, Pound served as sports editor of the Athens Banner-Herald.
Colonel Pound is survived by his wife, Evlyn; sons Sergeant Major Merritt Pound III and Richard Weaver II; daughters, Libby Weaver (Hollett), Dr. Susan Weaver (Hawn), and Nancy Weaver (Gaultney); 11 granchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
