WACO, Texas - The 15th-ranked Baylor women's tennis team opened the 2013 dual-match season with a 7-0 shutout win vs. Sam Houston State on Thursday at the Hurd Tennis Center.
"We got one day better today," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "It was just another day the office for us. Sam Houston State definitely presented some challenges, so it was a perfect home opener for us."
In doubles action, BU fell behind early as the No. 3 pairing of Abby Stainback and Jordaan Sanford dropped an 8-2 decision vs. Imke Jagau and Kayla Stevenson. However, Baylor's No. 1 team of Ema Burgic and Victoria Kisialeva responded quickly by rolling to an 8-3 win over Tanya Postnikova and Nadia Dubyanskaya.
The focus of the match then shifted to court No. 2 where the contest that would decide the double point was tied at six games apiece. The Lady Bear tandem of Alex Leatu and Megan Horter promptly recorded a break to go up, 7-6. Leatu then held serve to clinch the match, 8-6, and give Baylor the 1-0 lead in the contest.
"A big part of our doubles is the way we serve and on the days we struggle to serve doubles will be tough," Scrivano said. "On the days that we execute we can beat anyone in doubles."
BU kept its momentum rolling into singles play as the 16th-ranked Burgic made quick work of Sheridan Currie at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0. The sophomore lost only four points while serving in taking the match in just 43 minutes.
Sanford was not far behind as she downed Maddie Mortimore, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot. Freshman Victoria Kisialeva gave Baylor the clinching point by defeating Posnikova, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 5 position.
With the match in hand, Horter took down Jagau, 6-2, 6-0, while Leatu beat Petaia, 6-1, 6-3, and Stainback got past Dubyanskaya, 7-5, 6-1. Baylor is now 6-4 all-time vs. the Bearkats.
Baylor will now host three teams for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Hurd Tennis Center on Saturday and Sunday. The Lady Bears will open with a match on Saturday vs. No. 36 Florida State at 11 a.m. The other two teams, 21st-ranked Texas Tech and 29th-ranked Rice will face off at 2 p.m. The winners of the two matches will then play on Sunday at 2 p.m., while the losers will play at 11 a.m. The event serves as the qualifying rounds for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
