LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 2 USC men's tennis team corralled another two wins in this early stretch of 2013 action, doubling up for a busy day that saw the Trojans tack up a 7-0 sweep of No. 57 Cal Poly and a 6-1 win over UC Irvine at Marks Stadium. Freshman Max de Vroome was the clinching hero in both matches, rolling to two forceful wins from his spot on court four to lift the Trojans to a 4-0 record on the year.
The Trojans put forth another relatively smooth shutout in today's clash with No. 57 Cal Poly. USC's doubles duos on courts two and three got the job done, with Michael Grant and Jonny Wang opening up the winning ways with an 8-3 win at the No. 3 spot. Max de Vroome and Roberto Quiroz fended off a late push at the No. 2 spot to win and clinch the doubles point with an 8-6 decision that suspended play on court one with Emilio Gomez and Eric Johnson on the ropes.
In singles against the Mustangs, USC was all business at the top two slots. #24 Roberto Quiroz rolled up a 6-1, 6-1 win over Marco Comuzzo to make it 2-0, and then #27 Emilio Gomez wrapped up Andre Dome with a 6-2, 6-2 decision on court one. #78 freshman Max de Vroome was the clincher for the Trojans a bit later, as the high-powered newcomer dealt out a 6-3, 6-4 win over Derek Klein to secure victory for the Trojans with a 4-0 lead. On court three, #61 sophomore Eric Johnson would rebound from losing the first set to fight his way into a tiebreaker in the second. Johnson won six straight points to win that breaker, and then won seven straight to fight back and win the match against Jordan Bridge 2-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (10-4). It would be straight-set victories on the remaining two courts, as junior Michael Grant stayed strong for a 7-5, 6-2 win over Naveen Beasley at the No. 6 spot, while sophomore Jonny Wang stayed in control on court five for a 6-4, 7-5 win over Jurge De Jager that wrapped up the match's action.
About an hour later, the Trojans retook the courts to take on UC Irvine in the second round of USC's doubleheader on the day. the Anteaters would put some pressure on the Trojans in doubles play when UCI answered Johnson/Gomez's 8-4 win on court two with an 8-4 win of its own on court three. That forced USC's No. 1 pair of de Vroome/Quiroz to regroup and fend off the Anteaters for an 8-6 win that secured a 1-0 lead for the Trojans entering singles play.
Singles play opened up with Jonny Wang on a warpath on court five. The sophomore silenced his opponent Jonathan Poon with a 6-0, 6-0 decision that rang up Wang's second singles win of the day. Emilio Gomez, too, would make it a winning day of singles play as he eased by Tyler Pham 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot to put the Trojans in striking distance, up 3-0. That's when another round of clinching heroics would come from the arms of freshman Max de Vroome, whose smooth 6-2, 6-2 win over Shuhei Shibahar on court four iced the win for USC, up 4-0. Comeback kid Eric Johnson rallied back from an 0-4 deficit in his No. 2 singles match with Ryan Cheung to make it 5-0 Trojans on a 7-5, 6-1 win from the sophomore. On court six, manager-turned-roster-player Michael Tang was competing in his first match as a Trojan after serving as an all-star team manager and stringer for the past three seasons. Tang proved a fighter, but UCI's Justin Agbayani would pull out the win with a 6-3, 6-2 decision that tallied the Anteaters' first point of the match. With USC up 5-1, Roberto Quiroz sealed the deal from the No. 3 spot with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Jacob Jung, and that was a wrap on a 6-1 USC victory over visiting UC Irvine.
The Trojans now turn to take on No. 17 Texas later this week, with a Friday (Feb. 1) tangle with the Longhorns at 3 p.m. at Marks Stadium.
