WACO, Texas - Baylor's 15th-ranked women's tennis team hits the road for the first time this season by traveling to Gainesville, Fla. to take on top-ranked Florida on Saturday, Feb. 2 at noon (CST).
"For a team that's young and unproven, playing teams like Florida on the road is a necessary step to becoming a great team," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "I'm excited to see how our players respond in that situation. The most beneficial thing about having a great schedule and playing the two-time defending champion is that it's a great opportunity to gauge where your team is right now."
On the season, the Lady Bears are 3-0 after completing a successful ITA Kick-Off Weekend. BU knocked off 36th-ranked Florida State, 4-2, and notched a comeback 4-3 victory over 21st-ranked Texas Tech.
Baylor has combined for a 7-0 mark in the top three singles positions, as well as a 3-2 record in the top two doubles spots. Sophomores Ema Burgic, ranked No. 16, and Megan Horter are a combined 5-0 on Courts 1 and 2, respectively. Junior Jordaan Sanford is also a perfect 2-0 at the No. 3 spot in the lineup. Burgic and doubles partner Victoria Kisialeva are 2-1 at the No. 1 position, with Horter and Alex Leatu going 1-0 on Court 2.
The last time these two teams met, Florida got past Baylor, 5-2, on Feb. 4, 2012, at the Hurd Tennis Center. In the all-time series, Florida has a 4-0 advantage over BU.
The Gators opened 2013 at home with two 7-0 shutouts over 43rd-ranked South Florida and UCF. UF has six different singles players ranked within the top 125, including No. 1 Sofie Oyen and No. 5 Lauren Embree. In doubles, Florida's tandem of Olivia Janowicz and Caroline Hitimana sits at No. 47.
After the Florida match, Baylor will head to Charlottesville, Va. for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships from Feb. 8-11.
