CHAPEL HILL --- No. 8 North Carolina face its first top-20 opponent of the young season Sunday when the Tar Heels host No. 16 Michigan at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center at 1 p.m. The match will be Carolina's final action before traveling to Charlottesville, Va., for the 2013 ITA National Team Indoor Championships Feb. 8-11.
The Tar Heels (4-0) are coming off a four-win week that saw them sweep Elon and UNC Greensboro in non-conference action before defeating No. 68 Auburn and No. 46 VCU by matching 4-0 scores during the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Carolina sports a nation-best seven ranked singles players, led by senior Gina Suarez-Malaguti at No. 11. The freshman duo of Whitney Kay and Ashley Dai is ranked No. 8 in the country in doubles and is already 15-3 in 2012-13. All nine Tar Heels have at least one dual match singles win, with Tessa Lyons and Caroline Price leading the way at 3-0.
Suarez-Malaguti is joined in the singles poll by Kay (21), Zoe De Bruycker (28), Price (36), Dai (65), Lyons (101) and Lauren McHale (111). McHale and Lyons are also ranked No. 51 in the doubles poll.
The first 100 students in attendance Sunday will be treated to free food and there will be a serving contest with prize giveaways between doubles and singles. Admission for all fans is free of charge.
