GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The 15th-ranked Baylor women's tennis were shutout, 7-0, by top-ranked Florida on Saturday at the Ring Tennis Complex.
In doubles action, Alexandra Cercone and Brianna Morgan notched the first doubles victory for the Gators on Court 3 over Baylor's Megan Horter and Alex Leatu, 8-3. Florida's Lauren Embree and Sophie Oyen followed suit with an 8-5 victory against Ema Burgic and Kiah Generette at the No. 1 spot to clinch the doubles point.
"Overall, we're just a work in progress," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We have a lot of stuff that we have to go through to become a great team, and today's just another part of that process."
In singles action, Florida (3-0) earned straight-set victories on Courts 2, 3, 4, and 6. Burgic, Horter and Sanford were all dealt their first dual-match losses of the season. Generette's 6-4, 6-0 loss on Court 4 against No. 22 Danielle Collins clinched the match for the Gators.
The last two singles matchups of the day went into tiebreakers. Victoria Kisialeva lost her first set, 6-2, but then came back with a 7-5 win in the second. She dropped the third set 1-0 (10-5).
Burgic's contest against No. 5 Embree was the last to finish. Burgic lost the first set, 6-4, but came back to win the second set, 7-6 (6) in a tiebreaker. Embree then won the third-set tiebreaker 1-0 (10-7) to close out the day.
"We gathered a lot of information today," Scrivano said. "We know exactly where we are right now and what it's going to take to become a national championship-caliber team."
With a 3-1 record on the year, BU now travels to the ITA National Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va. from Feb. 8-11.
