Georgia to Face Texas in Round of 16 at ITA National Team Indoors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.--The No. 6 Georgia women's tennis team will square off with No. 11 Texas in the Round of 16 at the 2013 ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

The Bulldogs enter the tournament as the fourth seed. UCLA is the top seed, followed by Duke and Southern California.


"We're looking forward to this weekend," said head coach Jeff Wallace. "We have a lot to build on and think that we can really do a lot as a team. All of the teams that made it [to ITA National Team Indoors] are very good and will be excited to get out on the courts. It's going to be a great event."

Georgia is led by sophomore Lauren Herring and junior Maho Kowase who are a combined 44-7 this year. Herring, the winner of six in a row is ranked eighth in the country is 10-2 against ranked opponents. Kowase, ranked 18th nationally, is 8-4 versus ranked opponents this year. In doubles, the duo of No. 22 Lilly Kimbell and Maho Kowase are 9-1 this year. Last year, the pair set the school record for consecutive doubles victories with 21. Freshman Silvia Garcia and Fuller have gone 4-0 as a doubles pairing this spring, including two wins against nationally ranked opponents

Texas is 2-0 in dual matches this season with wins over Wichita State and Utah during ITA Kickoff Weekend. Georgia is 11-3 all-time versus the Longhorns, including a 4-0 win in the Round of 16 during the 2012 NCAA Tournament in Athens. Georgia won the doubles point and then Kowase clinched the match with a third Georgia singles win. Texas' lone ranked player is No. 79 Noel Scott who is 7-3 in singles this year.

The Bulldogs have won the National Team Indoor Championships three times (1994, 1995, 2002) and finished second three times (2001, 2004, 2009). The Bulldogs are making their 23rd appearance at the National Team Indoors and own a 48-19 all-time in the tournament.
