Charlottesville, Va. - The 17th-ranked Nebraska Huskers (5-1, 1-0 Big Ten) were defeated by the eighth-seeded No. 10 Miami Hurricanes (6-0, 0-0 ACC) in the first round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The Canes move on to the second round to face UCLA while Nebraska moves to the consolation matches to face the Vanderbilt Commodores Saturday at 9 a.m. ET.
 
The Huskers took the early lead in the doubles play by securing a victory at the No. 1 and 2 positions. At No. 1 Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova for Nebraska defeated Canes' Lina Lileikite and Stephanie Wagner 8-7 (7-5) while Huskers Stefanie Weinstein and Janine Weinreich toppled Miami's Melissa Bolivar and Kelsey Laurente 8-6 at the No. 2 position. Nebraska's Maggy Lehmicke and Izabella Zgierska fell to the Hurricanes' Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno 8-7 at the No. 3 position.
 
Heading into singles on the 1-0 lead, the Huskers lost the advantage when Izabella Zgierska lost to Miami's Clementina Riobueno 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 position to tie the score 1-1. Nebraska's Mary Weatherholt pushed the lead to 2-1 at the No. 1 position by defeating Hurricanes' Monique Albuquerque 6-2, 7-6.
 
That would be the last point for the Huskers as a series of losses sealed victory for Miami. At the No. 4 position Huskers' Janine Weinreich fell to Miami's Melissa Bolivar 6-2, 4-6, 1-6 before Nebraska's Maggy Lehmicke was ousted by the Hurricanes' No. 92 Stephanie Wagner 3-6, 6-4, 1-6 at the No. 5 position.
 
The deciding point came at the No. 3 position where Miami's No. 51 Kelsey Laurente defeated Nebraska's Stefanie Weinstein 6-1, 5-7, 6-4. The No. 2 position match went unfinished where Nebraska's Patricia Veresova was on the road to victory leading Miami's No. 57 Lina Lileikite 6-7, 6-3, 4-1 before the victory was decided and the match concluded unfinished.
 
Depending on tomorrow's results, the Huskers move on to a second consolation match on Sunday with a victory or end the tournament with a loss.
