CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 21 Vanderbilt dropped a tough match Saturday afternoon to No. 17 Nebraska, 4-3, in the consolation match of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship hosted by the University of Virginia at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
 
After the loss, Vanderbilt dropped to 4-2 on the season, while Nebraska improved to 6-1 overall with the win. Vanderbilt has yet to play a single opponent not ranked in the top 30 this season.
 
Vanderbilt will play in one final consolation match Sunday. The opponent and time will be decided later today.
 
The match came down to No. 2 singles between Vanderbilt’s Courtney Colton and Nebraska’s Patricia Veresova. Veresova took set one by score of 6-4 before Colton came back to win the second set, 6-4. It all came down to the third set and Veresova winning the set and the match for Nebraska, 6-3.
 
The Huskers were able to win the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Mary Weatherholt and Patricia Veresova defeated Colton and Lauren Mira, 8-5. On court No. 2, Janine Weinreich and Stefanie Weinstein knocked off Ashleigh Antal and Marie Casares in a tough battle, 8-6.
 
Vanderbilt was able to pick up a win in No. 3 doubles, as Frances Altick and Georgina Sellyn defeated Maggy Lehmicke and Izabella Zgierska, 8-4.
 
Despite losing the doubles point, the Commodores began singles play on a strong note, winning on courts No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6.
 
Casares defeated (Stefanie) Weinstein in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 3 position. Sellyn then won her 10th match of the season, with a win over Weinreich, 6-2, 6-3. Antal delivered the final win of the day for VU over Zgierska, 6-3, 6-3.
 
Nebraska registered wins with Weatherholt over Mira, 6-1, 6-4 and Lehmicke over Altick, 6-4, 6-3.
 
Upon completion of the ITA National Team Indoors, Vanderbilt heads to Texas for a two-match road trip Feb. 16-17. The Commodores will play No. 15 Baylor Feb. 16 in Waco and then No. 38 TCU in Fort Worth Feb. 17.
