CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 11 Texas (2-3) won the doubles points and picked up wins from Aeriel Ellis and Breaunna Addison over ITA top-15 opponents, but No. 9 Alabama (6-1) edged the Longhorns by a 4-3 count Sunday at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.  The match was the last consolation bracket contest for both teams at the 16-team tournament.

Texas started the match by winning the doubles point for the second time in as many matches.  Alabama opened with a win at first doubles, but Texas responded with tiebreak wins at the second and third positions to seal the doubles point.  UT’s Ellis and Elizabeth Begley teamed up for an 8-7 win over Alabama’s Antonia Foehse and Maya Jansen at second doubles.

The Longhorns clinched the doubles point with their win at the third slot, where Lina Padegimaite and Annat Rabinovich teamed up for an 8-7 win over Emily Zabor and Yasmeen Ebada.

Alabama evened the match at one-all when its 59th-ranked Jansen defeated UT’s 79th-ranked Scott at third singles, 6-0, 6-1.  The Crimson Tide assumed a 2-1 lead at fourth singles, where Foehse posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over UT’s Begley.

Texas evened the tally at two when Ellis scored her second top-15 win in as many days, as she knocked off Alabama’s 12th-ranked Macfarlane at first singles, 6-4, 6-4. Alabama reclaimed the lead at sixth singles, where its 105th-ranked Natalia Maynetto dealt UT’s Juliana Gajic a 7-6, 6-2 defeat.

Texas, however, evened the match again, as UT’s Addison scored a win over Alabama’s 13th-ranked Guarachi at No. 2 singles.  Addison’s 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory evened the match at three points apiece, which left the match at fifth singles to decide the team victor.

UT’s Padegimaite dropped the first set to Alabama’s Emily Zabor at fifth singles, 6-4 before rallying to take the second set, 7-5.  Zabor yielded nothing to Padegimaite in the final set, where she posted a 6-0 win to take the match and give Alabama the 4-3 victory.

Texas resumes dual-match play on Friday, Feb. 22 when it visits Northwestern.
