SEATTLE, Wash. – After capturing a 4-1 win over No. 17 Texas back in the closing weeks of January, the seventh-ranked University of Kentucky men’s tennis team booked a spot in the 2013 Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s National Indoor Championships, which will begin on Friday in Seattle, Wash.
No. 7 Kentucky will face No. 10 Mississippi State in a clash of two Southeastern Conference teams in the opening round on Friday at 2:00 p.m. ET. The Wildcats are one of seven SEC teams which qualified for the championships, by far the most of any conference in the tournament.
UK enters the match with Mississippi State on a two-match winning streak and an 8-1 record overall on the season. UK swept a doubleheader on Tuesday with No. 29 Notre Dame (4-3) and Eastern Kentucky (7-0) after beginning the season 6-0.
In the Wildcats win on Tuesday over ND, the Irish were the first team to take the doubles point from Kentucky as the Wildcats had taken the doubles point in each of the first seven matches of the season. No. 43 Tom Jomby/Kevin Lai earned one of their biggest wins of the season as the duo moved to 7-2 on the season in doubles with a win over No. 15 Greg Andrews/Spencer Talmadge of the Irish 8-6.
Kentucky took down Mississippi State 6-1 last year in Starkville in the last meeting between the two sides.
Kentucky has played one of the toughest schedules this season, as the Wildcats have already recording three wins over top-25 teams, and five wins over teams currently comprised in the ITA's top 50. The Wildcats are undefeated at home this season, with a 5-0 mark at the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Center in Lexington.
The match in Seattle will begin at 11:00 a.m. PT, 2:00 p.m. ET versus the Bulldogs. There will be a live blog available at UKathletics.com and live scoring that will be provided by the University of Washington, who is hosting the championships this season.
