LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Pacific Coast Doubles Championship, now in its 124th year, opened today at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. The Pepperdine men’s tennis team’s No. 2 pair of Sebastian Fanselow and Alex Sarkissian won three consecutive matches to advance to the round of 16.
Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan College Prep) and Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC), seeded No. 6, opened the day with a three-set triumph over Andrew Carlisle and Ciaran Fitzgerald of West Coast Conference rival school San Diego.
The duo defeated UC San Diego’s Kona Luu and Max Jiganti in the round of 64, before downing Ross and Adam Putterman of Division III school Washington University in Saint Louis.
Fanselow and Sarkissian will take on top-seeded and #18-ranked Chris Konigsfeldt and Campbell Johnson in the round of 16 tomorrow morning.
The Pepperdine alumni had a strong showing on opening day. 2006 graduate Scott Doerner teamed up with Hugh Clarke, who competed with the Waves from 2009-12, and reached the round of 32. Doerner and Clarke defeated current college players from UC San Diego and Stanford before losing to #54-ranked Marcos Giron and Dennis Novikov of UCLA.
Jenson Turner, teammates with Clarke from 2009-12, reached the second round, as did 1986 graduate Kelly Jones. Jones, a two-time NCAA doubles champion in 1984 and 1985, was announced as a 2013 ITA Men’s Collegiate Tennis Hall of Fame inductee earlier today.
Although Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) and Francis Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State) made an early exit from the main draw, the Waves No. 1 doubles team rebounded with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jakob Karnopp and Andrew Raphaelson in consolation.
