CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The 15th-ranked University of Miami women's tennis team will look to bounce back from a tough loss as they take on 23rd-ranked Clemson University on Sunday at 12p.m. at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Hurricanes (6-3, 0-1 ACC) faced FSU last weekend in their conference opener and fell in a heartbreaker, 4-3. The day kicked off with two decisive doubles victories for the Canes, as the No. 42 duo of Lina Lileikite and Stephanie Wagner cruised to an 8-4 victory right behind the duo of Monique Albuquerque and Clementina Riobueno's 8-3 win.
Wagner also sparkled in singles, earning the Canes' first singles point of the afternoon with a decisive 6-3, 6-2 victory over No. 95 Mia Vriens. She moves to 9-3 on the season in singles play. Fellow freshman Deborah Suarez also won her singles match, 6-4, 6-3, moving to 9-1 in spring singles.
Though those were the only points Miami was able to score, three Canes battled through three sets. Kelsey Laurente (#74), Monique Albuquerque and Melissa Bolivar all dropped their first sets and fought back to win the second before falling in the third.
Clemson (3-4, 1-0 ACC) is also coming off of a loss, having fallen to No. 13 Stanford, 5-2, last weekend. All four of the Tigers' losses have been to top-15 teams. Clemson's two points came in singles victories by Beatrice Gumulya and Tristen Dewar. Gumulya, ranked 57th in the nation, beat No. 10 Krista Hardebeck, 6-3, 6-2, and moves to 12-2 in singles play this season. Dewar earned a 7-5, 6-3 victory.
In last year's meeting between the two teams, Miami overcame two rain delays and a five-hour-long match to defeat Clemson, 5-2.
