LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Pepperdine men’s tennis team had a successful showing on day two of the Pacific Coast Doubles Championship, highlighted by two Wave pairs advancing to the consolation semifinals.
Francis Alcantara (Cagayan de Oro, Philippines/Fresno State) and Finn Tearney (Wellington, New Zealand/Wellington College) rebounded from yesterday’s loss in the main draw with three-straight wins in consolation today. The duo, ranked #27 in the ITA doubles poll, first prevailed over Anthony Tsodikov and Brandon Coupe in three sets before chalking a 6-2, 6-1 decision against No. 7 seed Trent Miller and Brent Davis.
In the consolation quarterfinals, Alcantara and Tearney topped KC Corkery and Blake Muller – a top seed at the tournament – 6-3, 6-1.
David Sofaer (Bellevue Hill, Australia/Sydney Distance Education HS) and Mousheg Hovhannisyan (North Hollywood, Calif./Continental Academy) had a similar day, winning three in a row to earn a spot in tomorrow’s consolation semifinals.
Although Sofaer and Hovhannisyan dropped their first set of the day, the duo won the next six in a row in convincing fashion. They will take on Alcantara and Tearney tomorrow morning.
Alex Sarkissian (Glendale, Calif./Glendale CC) and Sebastian Fanselow (Essen, Germany/Kaplan College Prep) won three-consecutive matches in the main draw yesterday to reach the round of 16. The Waves, seeded sixth, met with top seed and #18-ranked Chris Konigsfeldt and Campbell Johnson of California.
Although the favorited Golden Bears advanced, it was not without a strong challenge from Sarkissian and Fanselow. It took a tiebreaker in both sets to determine a winner.
The consolation semifinal is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Sunday morning, with the finals to follow at 1:30 p.m. Complete draws can be found here.
