SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Junior Marianne Jodoin extended her singles record as a Blue Devil to a perfect 10-0 to lead Duke women’s tennis team past No. 18 Notre Dame, 5-2, Sunday at the Eck Tennis Center in South Bend, Ind. The Blue Devils won their ninth doubles point of the season after the 27th-ranked duo of Ester Goldfeld and Hanna Mar sealed their match, 8-5, to extend Duke's record to 9-2 on the season, including a 5-2 tally against teams ranked in the top-25 of the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings.
The doubles point has been crucial for Duke this season, as the Blue Devils have tallied an undefeated record in matches in which they earn the point. In the third position, the duo of Jodoin and Monica Turewicz quickly dispatched of Quinn Gleason and Katherine White, 8-4, while senior Mary Clayton and sophomore Annie Mulholland had trouble with No. 38 Julie Sabacinski and Britney Sanders on court two, dropping the match, 8-5, to send all attention to court one, where Goldfeld and Mar traded games early with Notre Dame’s Jennifer Kellner and Chrissie McGaffigan to give Duke a 6-5 lead. After breaking serve, the Blue Devils were able to take a 7-5 edge, and held serve to clinch the match and the doubles point for Duke.
In singles play, 13th-ranked Mar broke serve late in the first set to lead her to a 6-4 win over Kellner on court two, and carried that momentum to sweep the second set, 6-0, to give Duke a 2-0 edge in the match.
On court one, No. 38 Goldfeld dropped the first set, 6-4, to 42nd-ranked Sanders but responded to win the second set, 6-3, to push the match into a third and decisive set for her second consecutive match. On Friday against No. 13 Michigan, Goldfeld fell behind early in the third set and despite a great comeback, could not overcome 33rd-ranked Ronit Yurovsky, sealing the match for the Wolverines. Against Notre Dame Sunday, Goldfeld learned from her mistake as she overwhelmed Sanders in the third set, 6-0 to give Duke a 3-0 lead.
Jodoin, a native of Varennes, Quebec, claimed her 10th singles win of the dual season after dispatching of Katherine White, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Jodoin has yet to lose a singles match in her Blue Devil dual match career, after transferring from Fresno State when she garnered Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Player of the Year twice, as well as WAC Freshman of the Year honors.
Clayton, ranked No. 62 in the latest ITA poll, responded to her loss in doubles by claiming the first set 6-0 over Gleason on court three but was unable to maintain her momentum, eventually falling, 6-0, 6-7, 6-7. In the fifth position, Mulholland fell behind 2-1 early in the opening set against Molly O’Koniewski, but reeled off four consecutive games to take a 5-2 lead. Mulholland closed out the first set, 6-3, before
dropping the second set, 7-6. In a third-set tiebreaker, Mulholland topped O’Koniewski, 10-3 to seal the match.
In the fourth position, Turewicz took the first and second set to a tiebreaker against McGaffigan, dropping the first set, 7-6, before winning the second, 7-6, to extend the match to a third set tiebreaker, where Turewicz retired due to injury.
Duke will next take to the courts as it travels to Las Vegas, Nev., to face Indiana, Friday, March. 15 at 11 a.m.
